Artist’s Statement
Jennifer Lorton’s artistry is not confined to brush on canvas. Creatively ingenious, she moves deeper—blending her proprietary plaster mixture with found objects, encaustic wax, gilding, journaling, collage and whatever strikes her in the creative moment—to enhance backgrounds and individual elements. Working as a contemporary mixed media artist, Lorton embraces bold color palettes infused with subtle nuances.
Many of Lorton’s paintings are filled with symbolic expressions found in the surroundings of life – winged animals, fish, grapes, flowers and plants – opening up worlds of interpretation for every viewer. Other pieces are abstract swaths of color enriched with deep texture and visceral patterns. All Lorton paintings are complex, layered works of self expression meant to evoke each observer’s personal thoughts and feelings.
Prior to working as a fine artist, Lorton was immersed in a flourishing career as a decorative artist. She specialized in mural painting, working with interior designers on high-end homes and commercial spaces such as wineries, restaurants, retail spaces and offices.
Lorton has established an impressive array of exhibitions and acknowledgements of her artistic accomplishments. Galleries around the country showcase Lorton’s art and her work has been shown in several museum exhibitions. A select piece is displayed annually as part of the Smithsonian Museum’s permanent art collection. Her paintings also hang in commercial establishments and are owned by an extensive list of private collectors. Lorton has been the resident artist for PlumpJack Winery where her work was viewed year-round in the tasting room. Complementing her original art pieces, several of Lorton’s paintings can be purchased as prints through the Bentley Publishing Group.
