Step 2

Writing. Early in the process I almost always write on the canvas. Sometimes it’s completely covered up, other times it peeks through the painting. I like the graphic element that text adds, but more importantly it’s like journaling, and it helps me get emotionally invested in the painting. People sometimes try to read the writing but that is rarely possible. I cover it for privacy, and because I think the ambiguity allows the viewer to become personally involved. Hopefully feeling their feelings, rather than just reading mine.
